Advanced Family Dentistry is proud to be the sponsor of not one, but three local teams in our area’s Odyssey of the Mind challenges. The three teams are from Meadowland Elementary School in Sterling, VA. In addition, we are pleased to announce that one of the Meadowland teams even came in third place in the regional competition held at Briar Woods High School on March 16, 2019.
“Giving back to our community where we and our own children live and work is so important to everyone here at Advanced Family Dentistry,” said Dr. Sonny Kim, DMD. “By supporting the local Odyssey of the Mind teams, we are able to help build team spirit and encourage learning in our area students.”
Odyssey of the Mind is a worldwide program designed to promote brainstorming in school-aged children. Students meet after school in small teams to come up with a creative solution to a problem. Then they make their solution a reality by building and creating it. Their solutions are presented in a local tournament where winners are chosen. It’s a great way to get students interested in STEM.
The students meet weekly throughout the Fall and Winter to work on their chosen projects. Local tournaments are held in various regions of the state in the late Winter and Spring. The 2019 Virginia State Tournament was held April 6th at Manassas Park High School. The Odyssey World Finals will take place May 22-25, 2019 at Michigan State University in East Lansing. Unfortunately, only the 1st and 2nd place teams get to advance. Maybe next year for our Meadowland teams!
