At some time in your life, your dentist is bound to notice a problem. You might have a cavity or a broken tooth. Or the problem can be more serious, involving dental surgery. No matter what procedure is recommended, you need to know all the facts before saying “yes” to the dentist’s recommendations.
1. Is this covered by my dental insurance?
Dental procedures can vary widely in price, depending on what is being done. You need to know how much the procedure will cost and how much will be covered by your dental insurance before you submit to the procedure. You dentist should be able to provide you with a description of the recommended procedure and its costs, and be able to tell you how much insurance will pay for. Don’t be afraid to ask this important question in advance; it is much easier to plan for a procedure than be surprised by its cost afterwards.
2. What are the risks of this procedure?
Any time surgery is suggested, it can create fear. Mostly of the unknown. You may worry if there will be health risks from the procedure or anesthesia, or be afraid that there will be pain during or after the dental work is done. A good dentist will take the time to explain what the procedure will entail and provide you with complete instructions on post-surgery care. Be sure your dentist is aware of your overall health, and any problems or medications involved with your current condition.
3. Can you provide me with enough information so that I can get a second opinion?
If you are facing a major dental issue, it’s okay to get a second opinion. This will help you understand what the problem is and how best to address it. Your dentist should be able to provide you with a description, x-rays or other dental charts that you can take to a second dentist to verify your condition and potential treatment plan. This will help you to make the best choice for your own dental health. Again, don’t be afraid to talk to your dentist about wanting to get a second opinion. Consider him or her your partner in your dental health care. Your dentist may even recommend someone.
